Drama At The Miss Brazil Gay 2009 Pageant
One of the many reasons I love GLBT pageants is that some of the contestants will be drop dead gorgeous, the talent numbers make the cis pageants look tame by comparison, and every now and then you get some serious sore loser drama.At this year's Miss Brazil Gay 2009 pageant, winner Ava Simoes had her wig and tiara snatched off her head by Miss Sao Paulo while doing a television interview.
I guess Miss Sao Paulo was really pissed about losing.
Talk about embarrassing for the reigning queen. But that's why you obey the first commandment of pageantry: Thou shalt secure thy wig so it won't come off.

Binyag/Baptism
Greenlight Entertainment presents Binyag (Baptism). Ran Domingo plays a man who grew up in the province and was used to the simple life. Armed with simple hopes and dreams, he is contented with his life alongside his childhood friend played by Ynez Veneracion. Everything changed when Paolo Rivero's character came to their town as a talent manager who convinced him to go to Manila to try his luck as an actor. Little did he know that he would experience all kinds of exploitation, and eventually led him to know his true self, and what his body and soul is yearning for. He returns to his province with lessons from his journey and with newfound realizations about himself.

Grupo Gay da Bahia (GGG, Bahia Gay Group), the oldest gay advocacy group in Brazil, published yesterday their yearly report on violent deaths of gay people in Brazil. According to the report, the number of people who are murdered because they are gay is up, 198 murders in 2009, compared to 189 in 2008.
Brazil leads the world in homosexual victims of murders. Mexico comes second (35 deaths) followed by the United States (25 deaths), according to the GGB.
Among the murdered, 117 were gay men (59%), 72 were transsexuals (37%) and 9 were lesbians (4%). Most of the crimes go unpunished (more than 90%).
GGB gathers information about violence against gays in Brazil for the last 35 years. The numbers are compiled from news reports, including print media, broadcast media, and Internet.
